The Verdict is in: ALL BISD Schools to Appear in Thursday's Parade

By Diego Garcia III | Editor of The Brownsville Beacon

The BISD Children's Parade story keeps on going. At first, grumblings about charter schools and private schools being kept out of Thursday's parade set off a firestorm of comments and complaints from charter school parents.

A letter circulated by Jubilee Academy informed their parents the Brownsville Independent School District would not be allowing charter schools to participate in Thursday's parade.

The district confirmed what was written in the letter by putting out their own press release. The verdict was in: Charter schools were out. Private schools were still going to be allowed to participate.

Now, the district has informed all their campuses they will all have to participate in Thursday's parade. The district usually rotated what schools would participate in the parade. Now, all 7 high schools, 11 middle schools, 35 elementary schools, and I assume the four alternative campuses, will all have to participate in some way, shape, or form.

Not all schools will be performing their traditional Charro Days dance routine. Only the schools performing at the Fiesta Folklorica will be dancing during the parade. This year, Cromack, Del Castillo, Gallegos, Garden Park, Hudson, Peña, Russel, and Yturria Elementaries will be dancing.

Other schools will be showcasing their marching bands, their ROTC units, their cheerleading squads, their dance teams, and their athletic programs. Some schools will field drill teams while others are preparing floats.

The superintendent, along with the top district brass, wants this year's parade to be a throwback to the times when all of the BISD campuses participated. Dr. Rene Gutierrez, BISD Superintendent, is quoted in an article written by Herald reporter Gary Long. Gutierrez says:

What we want to do is restore it back to what was intended from the very beginning, the Brownsville Independent School District Children’s Charro Days Parade on Thursday at the beginning of Charro Days...We want to be able to allow all our schools to participate, and so we need to be able to take care of our kids first.

Parade goers should be prepared for Thursday. Get ready for the BISD Children's Parade to break the record for longest parade in the history of Charro Days. Let's hope the parade isn't too long for the children who are going to participate as well as the ones in attendance.
