Brownsville Watchdog Zachary Blevins to Seek Seat on BISD School Board

 Editor's Note: Army veteran, comedian, and community activist Zachary Blevins announced his candidacy for the Brownsville Independent School District this afternoon. While we at the Beacon don't know Mr. Blevins personally, we wholeheartedly encourage idealistic community activists to seek election to city, county, and state office. Reading his announcement, we here at the Beacon hope Mr. Blevins brings sensible representation, responsibility, accountability, and civility to the school board. In the coming weeks, we hope to interview Mr. Blevins to get a more in-depth idea of his platform. We wish him all the best in the upcoming election. His announcement follows below.
I will be running for the position of BISD school board member to serve as a voice for our Brownsville community: for parents, teachers, and most importantly our children. This campaign is not about me, it’s about us. And for too long, community voices and concerns have been ignored and dismissed. Our movement considers the needs and social dignity of our Brownsville community:

1. Ensure money is appropriately invested in our public school district; first and foremost, benefiting our students.

2. Produce and implement policies with a zero-tolerance approach to bribery and corruption that hold myself and all board members, now and in the future, to the highest ethical standards.

3. Building a bridge of communication between BISD administration, employees, and parents: everyone who is a part of BISD deserves a voice.

For too long, we have allowed our board members to shuffle their feet, delay progress, and make deals that do not benefit or serve the great people of our community. It is time to take matters into our own hands to fight for a stronger, better, and safer school environment for our Brownsville children and ensure they have all the support they need to succeed inside and outside the classroom.

Together we have the power to not just resist self-interested agendas, but to reshape the way our school district operates. Many have mobilized in support of this vision. A vision that gives voice to the voiceless and valorizes the hard work that every BISD employee puts forth every single day. I am prepared to be proactive, collaborative, and ultimately do whatever it takes to make progress for our school district. It would be an honor to receive your support in November 2020.

Southmost is one of the oldest parts of Brownsville, and has recently gained notoriety for having some of Brownsville's best authentic home-style Mexican restaurants. Brownsville residents regularly make their way to taquerias and eateries on Southmost.  When I was an elementary school student, I was bused to Morningside Elementary for school. Take a Trip to Brownsville: In 1961

By Diego Garcia III  ★ Editor of The Brownsville Beacon Take a trip with me, if you please, to Brownsville, Texas in early August, 1961. it was hot, but there was some wind blowing in cooling things down a bit. Skies were also partly cloudy. City Goings-On:  Boca Chica was being expanded from a two-lane road to a four lane road from Military Highway to International Boulevard (Four Corners), and a proposal was being introduced to secure state funds to expand Boca Chica from two to four lanes from International to the Y split with Billy Mitchell. Police Chief Gus Krausse was defending the city's thin, 12 inch tall road medians (called "cattle chutes" that had been installed on Boca Chica and Palm Boulevard. Chief Krausse said they were primarily installed as safety measures to prevent cars from meandering from one lane to another. The Brownsville Blogosphere's Landscape is Changing

It seems 2020 has seen changes everywhere. Jerry McHale, publisher of the McHale Report , often times refers to Brownsville as the blogging capital of Texas. That's probably because the city's newspaper is a shell of the shell it used to be. The old Herald  offices close to downtown sit abandoned and dormant. Their skeleton crew works out of an office in the VentureX Building off the expressway. Because of the Herald's lack of local reporting, bloggers have usually reported on local stories and provided Brownsvillians with the goings-on around town. But the bloggers aren't what they used to be. Brownsville has starred to see a shift from blogs to video blogs, or vlogs, that are posted to Facebook and YouTube.
